One of the significant points of divergence among many Christians concerns the ordnance of baptism. Some teach that baptism is required for salvation, some that it is one of several necessary part of salvation, and others that while it is important, it is not part of salvation. This is but a sampling of the various beliefs and teachings about baptism. And most are put forth by God fearing people, who truly believe they hold the only biblically correct position on the issue.

It is not the intent of this article to dissuade or disagree with anyone’s position or beliefs. Rather, it is intended to encourage people to open their Bibles and research their positions with an open mind and open heart, unfettered by the chains of tradition.

This article also puts forth the position of this Church, with regard to the issue of baptism.

Before beginning our discussion, the position of this church on baptism needs to be stated up front. We believe that baptism (specifically the common use and understanding of the term in reference to  water baptism) is ordnance handed down to the church by Jesus Christ, representing a public confession and testimony  of a changed life, as well as both acceptance and commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It is neither a requirement nor a necessity for salvation, as salvation comes through faith.

While the subject mater is serious, before getting to in-depth, a little word game is in order. This is mainly to demonstrate a point and to hopefully encourage people to examine the evidence and come to their own conclusions, not necessarily parrot someone else’s conclusions. This will also hopefully help them grow in their Christian walk.

With a good concordance or dictionary handy, turn to Mark 7: 3-4. Look for the word “wash in both verses (may be immerse in some translations). Now find the original Greek words used in both these instances. In the first instance the word “nipto” is used. In the second instance, the word “baptizo” is used. Baptizo, in the New Testament is often translated as baptism. What this illustrates is that baptizo, when used in the Bible, does not always refer to Christian baptism.

Again, the point is for people to do their research, especially on such divisive subjects like baptism, to make sure they have a truly biblical position on the issue which they can support.
